Careers & Gateway

The Careers Department at Kaipara College is located opposite the Deans’ room, off the atrium. We have an open-door policy, where any student from Year 9 through to Year 13 can drop in during interval or lunchtime, or book an appointment with us.

Each year level has its own teaching programme:

  • Year 9 students visit the careers room for an introductory talk, and work through the Planit workbook
  • Year 10 students cover a careers module through mentoring, alongside class discussions with our careers adviser.
  • Year 11 students look at their passions, talents and ideals, complete the MB Simpsons personality profile, explore jobs by interest and put together a list of ten career options.
  • Year 12 and 13 students all have an individual meeting with our careers adviser to discuss their plans in more detail, and receive ongoing support throughout the year.

Our Careers Department runs a dedicated careers Google Classroom with a wide range of resources. Students are supported throughout by their whānau class teachers, who share these resources during whānau time and provide guidance to those who need it. As well as the Careers Department and whānau teachers, Kaitiaki/Deans can also step in to support students who extra help engaging with the process.

Each year our school sets aside around a month for students to explore career pathways. Using the government’s Tahatū Career Navigator website, students work backwards from the career they would like to pursue to the subjects that will help them get there.
