The Faculty of Special Education (FSE) is a fully integrated faculty at Kaipara College that provides tailored support for a range of students from Year 9 to Year 15.
Who we Support
We provide support for students with special education needs and other students who benefit from a more flexible approach to learning. We work with a both ORS (Ongoing Resourcing Scheme) funded and non-funded students, as well as students who may be funded through Oranga Tamariki, ACC, or other support programmes.
How FSE Works
Our team consists of three teachers and seven teacher aids who create a safe whānau environment where students can be themselves. We maintain the same school rules and expectations as the rest of the college, preparing students for life beyond school.
Our Focus
We emphasise life skills and practical learning, such as:
- Financial literacy
- Health and nutrition
- Gardening and food growing
- Meal preparation and cooking
- First aid
- Self-defence and personal safety
- Work experience and vocational pathways
We tailor programmes to individual needs. Some students transition to full-time mainstream classes as their confidence grows. Others participate in mainstream classes for subjects they can manage, supported by our core programme in literacy and numeracy.
Our Space
Our new, purpose-built facility includes quiet breakout areas, a central kitchen, and outdoor gardening space. This enables more hands-on, practical learning opportunities.
Accessing FSE
Most students are referred through SENCOs (Special Education Needs Coordinators) or learning support coordinators. We also invite prospective parents to contact us directly to discuss whether the FSE at Kaipara College is a good fit for their child.
