Puawai

Puawai is an alternative curriculum programme designed to support students with diverse needs. Puawai means “to blossom”, reflecting its purpose to help students succeed in their own way.

The programme provides an environment for students to learn essential skills for both academic success, and life beyond school. We have a range of support offerings to meet individual needs, such as:

• Numeracy and literacy support for NCEA achievement
• Extra time and in-class support for other assessments
• Real-life skills training, including budgeting and workplace behaviour
• Career pathways and work experience opportunities

How Puawai Works

The class is taught vertically, bringing together Level 1, 2, and 3 students in the same space. Each student has individualised support tailored to their specific needs. A teaching assistant works alongside the teacher, often focusing on Level 1 students whilst the teacher supports Levels 2 and 3. We work closely with the Careers Department to help students find a pathway that works for them, and we help students with course selection within Puawai.

The programme operates as a dedicated learning space with wraparound support. The teacher tracks student progress academically, pastorally, and for attendance. Collaboration with subject teachers, parents, and careers advisors ensures each student's pathway is coordinated. Reader and writer support is available for assessments.

Accessing Puawai

Students can apply for Puawai during course selection or be identified and recommended by their Dean or subject teachers. The programme is flexible, with students able to join throughout the year as needed.

Results

Recent successes include high NCEA pass rates, students progressing to university, and students entering work experience and employment. Students value the one-on-one relationships and personalised support the programme provides.
